Singapore Hawker Food Markets

Singapore has over 110 hawker centres — open-air food complexes inherited from the 1960s–70s push to formalise street food into hygienic, government- managed venues. Hawker culture was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020, and Singapore is the first country to give Michelin Stars to hawker stalls (2016). Most meals at a hawker centre cost S$3–8, and award-winning stalls (Michelin Bib Gourmand, Michelin Star, Netflix Street Food) sit side-by-side with humble neighbourhood cooks.
